The University of Copenhagen’s Ceremonial Hall

The Ceremonial Hall at the University of Copenhagen, located on Frue Plads in the historic main building designed by Peder Malling and built between 1831 and 1836, is the heart of the university’s academic traditions. The Ceremonial Hall is the grand hall used for formal events, including graduations, annual commemorations, doctoral promotions, ceremonies for honorary doctors, and official receptions.

Its interior is richly decorated with large wall paintings and ornate details, most notably the series of 147 bird‑pair murals created by the Danish painter Georg Hilker in the 1860s.

The hall’s elegant, vaulted ceiling, classical architectural features, and extensive artistic embellishments give it a distinctive, solemn atmosphere that reflects the university’s long academic tradition.

In recent years, the hall has been modernized to include energy-efficient lighting, integrated technical installations, and modern sound systems, while maintaining its historical aesthetic.
