Professor Bruno Fokas Sunguya is Chief Medical Officer of Tanzania, a position he assumed in September 2026.

He holds an MD, MSc, and PhD and brings extensive experience in public health research, medical education, and academic leadership.

Prior to joining the Ministry of Health, Professor Sunguya served as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Consultancy at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), where he previously held leadership responsibilities within research and academic development.

Throughout his career, his research and public health work has focused on nutrition, adolescent health, maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, and noncommunicable diseases. He has also contributed to international research and collaboration, including work with the World Health Organization.

In his current role, Professor Sunguya works to strengthen healthcare services and support the development of Tanzania’s health system, drawing on his extensive experience across research, education, and public health.
